Overview:
When an area is activated as a zonal sensor area, the area starts reporting real-time aggregated occupancy data for the configured area. Otherwise, occupancy data is not reported for the area.
Note: An area can only be enabled as a zonal sensor area when the following conditions are met.
Prerequisites:
Sensors in an area where Zonal Occupancy is enabled will report occupancy status 'Occupied' within a few seconds of detecting motion. The fixed vacancy timeout is 90 seconds; if no further motion is detected for this period, the sensor will report occupancy status 'Vacant'.
Also, please note that the timeout value is separate from the profile Active Motion Window value; thus, it is likely that a zone is marked as Vacant even if the lights in the zone are still On (when timeout value is less than the Active Motion Window value). Similarly, a zone can be marked as Occupied even though the lights in the zone are Off (timeout value is greater than the Active Motion Window).
Getting the Best Real-time Occupancy Data
To get real-time occupancy data, it is important to activate the sensors in the area as zonal sensors. Once this is done, the sensors will report occupancy data. Users have the option to use APIs or add an Enlighted Edge device to the lighting network.
1. Using APIs
An area is a grouping of sensors with an Area ID. When making a request, a single data point will be returned for all sensors within that particular area. If you ever need to view the IDs of all areas, you can query by using the Get All Areas request.
Users are required to purchase both a Sensor License and an API license based on the number of sensors needed to report real-time occupancy status. If additional licenses are required, see Request License to purchase them.
2. Adding Enlighted Edge Device to the Lighting Network
Once the sensors in the area are activated as zonal sensors, they will start reporting occupancy data.
When an Enlighted Edge is added to the Enlighted Lighting network, the activated zonal sensors will update the Enlighted Edge about the occupancy status of the area. At the same time, if there is no motion detected for 90 seconds, the sensors will report that the area is unoccupied. Licenses are not required when Enlighted Edge device is added to the lighting network. For more information, refer to Reporting Real-time Occupancy Data from Enlighted Edge.
Enable Zonal Sensors to Report Area Occupancy
To activate an area as a zonal sensor area,
- Click on the floor in the facilities' navigation panel.
- Click the Settings tab.
- Click the Edit button corresponding to the area name displayed in the lower portion of the screen.
Note: The Save button is displayed after you click the Edit button. - Check the Enable as Zone Sensor option to activate the sensors in the area to be zone sensors.
- Click the Save button.
The Zone Sensor Enabled column indicates the status of the zone sensors as True or False.
- True – Sensors in the area are activated to be zone sensors.
- False – Sensors in the area are disabled as zone sensors.
