Article Details

The Enlighted Edge Gateway consists of the Enlighted Edge Software hosted on the Siemens connect X300 Appliance. Enlighted Edge software enhances the performance of the Enlighted system and allows for on-premises integration with third-party devices and systems. The Enlighted Edge software will support low latency lighting control inputs and will provide Enlighted system data to third-party systems via BACnet/IP or other data transmission protocols. The Enlighted Edge Agent interfaces allow data to be streamed to customer's data servers or cloud storage endpoints utilizing MQTT or DTDL communication protocols.

Features

The Enlighted Edge software will provide for the following features/functionality:

  • Ability to create Motion and Switch Groups across multiple Gateways (Cross Gateway communication)
  • Low latency light control inputs from third-party Dry Contactor Closures or BACnet/IP systems
  • Allow for BACnet/IP integrations with on-premises BMS and Enlighted Manage in the Cloud (EMC) sites
  • Future cloud-based applications, such as Location Intelligence, will be supported by the Enlighted Edge for on-premise Manage locations
  • Sensor data from Gateways and contextual data from Manage is formatted and streamed to customer data storage servers or endpoints via Enlighted Edge Agents
  • Modular architecture of the Edge Agents allows for a cost-effective method to create or modify Input or Output Agents

The above diagram shows the data flows into the Enlighted Edge software hosted on the X300 appliance. The Telemetry data of the Wireless sensors is received by the Enlighted Edge software through the Gateway Agent and the contextual data of those sensors is received by the Manage Agent via RESTful API.

Those agents publish this data to the MQTT broker. The BACnet Agent will subscribe to that data for use by the BACnet stack (software), which is polled by the third-party system via the BACnet/IP protocol. The BACnet Agent will also publish commands to the sensors received from the BACnet stack through the MQTT Broker and on to the appropriate Manage Gateways.

MQTT Protocol, Functionality, and MQTT Broker

MQTT (Message Queuing Telemetry Transport) is a lightweight messaging protocol designed for IoT (Internet of Things) devices and applications. MQTT provides a publish-subscribe model for data transmission, where data is published to a broker and then subscribed by interested clients. An MQTT data stream is the data that is transmitted over the MQTT protocol. The data stream consists of MQTT Topic messages that are published by Edge Agents and received by MQTT broker. MQTT messages are typically small, consisting of a topic and a payload.

Hardware Requirements

The initial hardware requirements are the Siemens Connect X300 appliance

Here are the minimum recommended requirements for hosting the Enlighted Edge software on a third-party device, available at a future date.

  • Ubuntu Linux 22.04 System

  • Intel Xeon 64-bit processor, minimum quad-core, 2ghz

  • 16gb DDR4 RAM

  • Dual gigabit ethernet controller

  • Minimum 1 USB port

  • 4x1T SSD in RAID1+0 configuration (hardware or software raid)
