Sensor License
The Sensor License enable communication between the Enlighted Manage and commissioned sensors. Sensor License is required for Enlighted Gen 5 or newer sensors commissioned to the system. When the number of commissioned Gen 5 or newer sensors exceeds the quantity of active Sensor Licenses, the system will enter an out of compliance state.
The following Sensor License is available:
- Connected Lighting to IoT License (EM-CL2IoT-SU) — Connected Lighting (CL) to IoT capability. Perpetual SU-5 Sensor upgrade license.
Connected Lighting to IoT License (EM-CL2IoT-SU)
The Enlighted Sensor License tier enables users to realize the full value of sensor data via Enlighted's applications and advanced occupancy and location APIs. Sensor Licenses are also required to enable BLE on Enlighted's sensors.
All Gen 5 or newer sensors commissioned to Manage must be enabled with the appropriate license. For example, if a customer has commissioned 5,000 Gen 5 sensors and 1,000 Gen 4 sensors on a given Manage server and wants to enable BLE beaconing on any of the commissioned sensors, the customer needs to install at least 5,000 IoT sensor licenses on Manage.
See Request License for purchasing additional sensor licenses. Refer to the article License Management for an overview of how licenses are managed.
Upload Sensor Licenses:
When Sensor Licenses are purchased and successfully uploaded, the License Management screen displays the type and quantity of active sensor licenses and the quantity of commissioned Gen 5 or newer sensors commissioned to the system.

BACnet License (for on-premise Manage)
The BACnet license is applicable and available only for on-premise Manage servers. The BACnet interface provides seamless integration for communication between the Enlighted lighting network and Building Management Systems (BMS). BACnet enables lighting control and monitoring via the BMS.
This article describes BACnet licenses and how to determine the number of licenses or BACnet points needed.
BACnet License Types
Enlighted provides three types of BACnet licenses. A user can always enable BACnet points without the necessary licenses, but the proper software licenses must be purchased and installed on the system to remain in compliance.
- BACnet Base License (Product code: BAC-BS-SU-X-00)
- BACnet Group Point License (Product code: BAC-GP-AREA-X-00)
- BACnet Sensor Point License (Product code: BAC-SP-SU-X-00)
1. BACnet Base License (BAC-BS-SU-X-00)
The BACnet Base License is mandatory any time BACnet is enabled. The Group and Sensor Point licenses require the purchase of a BACnet Base License. The Base License entitles users to enable the following points:
Group Points | Description |
Manage Energy Consumed – Lighting: | Total energy consumption for all the lights |
Manage Energy Consumed – Plugload: | Total energy consumption for all the plugloads |
Manage Demand Response (DR) Level | Set demand response level for EM |
DR Duration | Duration value in minutes that the BMS sends to Manage and this point is displayed in the BACnet configuration report. |
Manage Emergency Status ON: | Sets all lights to a maximum level of 100% |
Gateway Outage Count | Number of gateways not currently communicating |
2. BACnet Group Point License (BAC-GP-AREA-X-00)
The Enlighted BACnet Group Point License enables a BMS to control lights and get data, such as occupancy status or energy consumption, from an area configured in Manage. This license entitles users to enable the following area-wide points:
Points | Description |
Area Consumed Energy – Lighting: | Total energy consumption for all the lights |
Area Consumed Energy – Plugload - Total: | Total energy consumption for all the plugloads |
Area Occupancy Status: | State of occupancy in the area |
Area Emergency Status ON: | Sets all lights to a maximum level of 100%. |
Area Lighting Control: | Controls light levels for the number of minutes specified in the ‘AreaManualOverrideDuration’ field. |
Area Override: | Sets lights to Holiday Profile override for the number of minutes specified in the override duration command issued from BMS. |
3. BACnet Sensor Point License (BAC-SP-SU-X-00)
This license includes points for each of the fixtures or plugload points. This is the number of sensors commissioned on Manage multiplied by the number of BACnet Sensor Points enabled.
Individual Points (Fixture)
Fixture Consumed Energy: | Energy consumed by the fixture |
Fixture Dim Level: | Read and set light level (0% - off, 100% - full on) |
Fixture Temperature: |
The temperature of the fixture |
Individual Points (Plugload):
Plugload Energy - Total: | Energy consumed by the Plugload |
Plugload Status – On/Off: | Read and set the state of the Plugload |
Note: Refer to the Enlighted Lighting BACnet PICS document for details.
Determine the Number of Sensors and BACnet Points
The table below summarizes the three deployment options for Enlighted Manage along with the scalability limits when BACnet is enabled. Sensor capacity is the total quantity of sensors commissioned to Manage. BACnet Points are the total number of BACnet points (base, group, and individual) being serviced by Manage.
Manage |
Max. Sensor Capacity |
Max. BACnet Points Supported |
Manage 1500 (Base) |
1500 |
3500 points |
Midrange Enlighted Manage 5000 (Midrange) |
5000 |
7000 points |
Enterprise Enlighted Manage (EEM) |
10,000 with BACnet 18,000 without BACnet |
35000 points |
The quantity of BACnet Base Licenses required when BACnet is enabled is equal to the quantity of Enlighted Gen 5 or newer sensors commissioned to the system.
1. Determine Group Points
When Area Group Points are enabled, the quantity of BACnet Group Point Licenses required is equal to the quantity of Group Points enabled multiplied by the number of areas configured in Manage. In the below example, a user has enabled all six BACnet Group Points. If there were 10 areas configured within Manage, then 60 BACnet Group Point Licenses (6 x 10) would be required.
2. Determine Individual Points
When Individual Points are enabled, the quantity of BACnet Individual Points required is equal to the quantity of Individual Points enabled multiplied by the quantity of Enlighted Gen 5 or newer sensors commissioned to the system. In the below example, four BACnet Individual Points are enabled. If Manage has 50 Gen 5 (SU-5) sensors, then Manage would be using 200 BACnet Individual Point Licenses.
Please contact Enlighted Support or your Enlighted representative to purchase the necessary software licenses. See Request License for how to request and install your purchased software licenses on Manage.
Upload BACnet Licenses
When additional BACnet licenses are purchased and successfully uploaded, the License Management screen displays the type of license that is uploaded along with the unit of measure and the license quantity, as shown below. For instructions about how to upload a license, see Upload License.
- Base License – These licenses grant users the privilege to enable BACnet and enable all or some of the BACnet Manage Group Points. When the quantity of commissioned Enlighted Gen 5 sensors is greater than the quantity of active BACnet Base active licenses installed, Manage is out-of-compliance.
- BACnet Group Point – These licenses grant users the privilege to enable some quantity of BACnet Area Group Points. When the number of BACnet Area Group Points enabled multiplied by the number of areas is greater than the quantity of active BACnet Group Point licenses, Manage is out-of-compliance.
- Sensor Point – These licenses grant users the privilege to enable some quantity of BACnet Individual Points. When the number of BACnet Individual Points enabled multiplied by the quantity of commissioned Enlighted Gen 5 sensors is greater than the quantity of active BACnet Sensor Point Licenses installed on Manage, then Manage is out-of-compliance.
Refer to the article Enable BACnet to learn how to enable BACnet in Manage.
API License
Enlighted provides APIs for integration with third-party systems and applications. The Enlighted Manage has two distinct API product families: Energy and Environment APIs and Occupancy APIs. The Energy and Environment APIs support energy reporting and lighting control use cases, while Occupancy APIs support various real-time space management, space utilization, and security use cases.
Energy and Environmental APIs are complimentary with the purchase of Connected Lighting or IoT sensors and do not require additional licenses.
Occupancy APIs require Sensor license as well as API license. The API license provides three API calls:
API License (EM-API-OCC-01/02/03)
The API Sensor License enables users to realize the full value of sensor data via Enlighted's advanced occupancy APIs. Customers can request for 1/2/3-year contracts. For the sensors to report occupancy data, you will need the licenses based on the number of sensors configured in the system. Refer to the License Types and Product Codes.
1. Real-time Area Occupancy
- Real-time availability of bookable spaces (conference rooms and phone booths)
- Automated check-in of bookable spaces
- Utilization reporting for bookable spaces
- Occupancy based control of HVAC systems
The sensors in the area will start reporting occupancy data only after they are activated as zonal sensors. Refer to the article Enable Zonal Sensors to enable them as zonal sensors to get occupancy data.
An area is a grouping of sensors with an Area ID. The request will return a single data point for all sensors in the area. If you ever need to see the IDs of all areas, you can query those by using the Get All Areas request.
Compliance for these licenses is determined based on the quantity of active API Licenses relative to the quantity of areas enabled as zone sensors. When the quantity of these licenses is less than the quantity of areas configured as zonal sensors, the system will be out of compliance.
When a customer with IoT or Connected Lighting sensors receives an 'out of compliance' warning message when areas are enabled as zone sensors, please ignore this message and it will not adversely affect system operation. Enlighted will address this in the next release.
2. Real-time Desk Occupancy
The Real-time Desk Occupancy API is most commonly used to support the following use cases:
- Real-time availability of unassigned desks
- Automated desk check-in
- Utilization of desks
Compliance for these licenses is determined based on the quantity of active API Licenses relative to the quantity of sensors with a Fixture Type of 'Desk Sensor'. When sensors are designated as a Desk Sensor, the sensors report real-time occupancy status. Follow the procedure described in Enable Desk Sensors to designate sensors as 'Desk Sensor' Fixture Type, and then use the following API to provide desk occupancy data.
3. Fine-grain Motion License
The Fine-grain Motion API is most commonly used to support the following use cases:
- Utilization of large open spaces
- Break-in forensics
Compliance for these licenses is determined based on the quantity of active API Licenses relative to the quantity of sensors with 'Motion API' enabled. When the Motion API is enabled, the sensor will send 5-second motion bit data to Manage every 5 minutes. Refer to the article Enable Sensors for Fine-grain Motion. The following API provides Fine-grain motion data:
Upload API Licenses
See Request License for purchasing additional sensor licenses. Refer to the article License Management for an overview of how licenses are managed.
When API licenses are purchased and successfully uploaded, the License Management screen displays the active API License uploaded along with the number of licenses. For instructions about how to upload a license, see Upload License.
For example, the number of API licenses available is displayed on the screen. The license quantity of 100 means you can enable up to 100 sensors or areas to report occupancy information.

When you take any of the following actions based on the appropriate license type and quantity, the system can become out-of-compliance:
- Commissioning additional sensors
- Enabling BACnet
- Enabling additional BACnet points
- Enabling an area as a ‘Zone Sensor’
- Assigning a sensor as a desk sensor
- Enabling fine-grain motion API for a sensor
The following sections describe the actions you can take during the various phases of bringing the system back to compliance.
Grace Period
When the system becomes out of compliance, Manage will automatically notify users that the system is out of compliance via a banner at the top of the screen. An entry will be added to the system logs. This banner can be closed by the user.
The system will continue to operate normally, allowing users to configure, maintain, and support existing functions on the sensors in the network while the necessary software licenses are obtained and installed. Alternatively, users can decommission sensors or change BACnet and/or API system configurations to come back into Compliance.
Coming into Compliance
Out-of-compliance systems can be brought back into compliance in multiple ways, based on what caused the system to go out-of-compliance. It is your responsibility to ensure that your system is in compliance. Contact Enlighted Support for questions or to help identify what is needed to bring the system back into compliance.
