Create Daylight Group

This article applies to Manage v4.5. Toggle the New User Experience button to view the new Manage UI. If you do not see the toggle button to switch between the New UI and Classic UI, please contact Enlighted Support to enable the toggle button in your Manage application. 

Overview

Daylight groups provide a uniform light dim level across a group of fixtures for improved aesthetics. The lights are dimmed or brightened to achieve a uniform group light level in response to fluctuations in daylight. Daylight groups aim to find the right balance between aesthetics, occupant comfort, and energy efficiency. This article explains how to create a Daylight Group. Note: Since all fixtures and Plug Load Controllers in a group must be bound to the same Gateway (GW), fixtures from other floors cannot be supported.

Creating a Daylight Group

Before creating a daylight group, read the Recommended Preliminary Steps for Creating a Daylight Group.

To create a Daylight Group,  

  1. Click Facilities in the left navigation pane and select a floor.
  2. Click on the Groups tabs. The Switch, Motion, and Daylight Groups list is displayed in the right pane. In addition, the floor map shows Switch, Motion, and Daylight groups identified and grouped by color on the floor map.

  1. Select the Gateway associated with the devices. There are two ways to select a Gateway:
    • If you know the Gateway name, use the Gateway filter GW_Filter_Icon.png icon to select a Gateway from the dropdown list, and click Apply to view the devices belonging to the Gateway.
    • If you do not know the Gateway name, right-click on the Gateway in the floor map and select Filter Using this Gateway to view the devices belonging to the selected Gateway.

  1. Select the Daylight group check box. The parameters corresponding to the Daylight group are highlighted.

Configure Daylight Group Parameters

Now, select the Daylight Group parameters for the selected sensors.

  1. Light Level - Select a method for calculating the Group Light level.
    • Average Daylight – Some fixture light levels in the group will be brighter than the Target Ambient Light Levels, and some less bright. On average, the light levels will meet the target. This is the recommended option to use.
    • Maximum Daylight – Fixture light levels will optimize for reduced energy usage. If all the sensors have the same target, then the sensor with the maximum daylight will be the sensor that dictates the Group Light Level. As daylight increases, the lights will be dimmed to the minimum required amount of light. With this setting, no occupants will have too much light, and occupants can always turn on their task lighting to increase comfort.
    • Minimum Daylight – Light levels will ensure all targets are met or exceeded. All fixtures will be set to the maximum light level required to meet all the sensors’ targets. If all the sensors have the same target, then the sensor with the minimum daylight will be the sensor that dictates the Group Light Level. That is, all occupants will have sufficient light. Choose this method in an office environment where it is important that all occupants have sufficient light, and it’s unlikely that too much light would cause discomfort.
    • Daylight at Master Sensor – Light levels will ensure that the user-designated master sensor's light level is set to its target. In this case, the targets, and ambient readings of all other sensors in the group are ignored. This method simulates more traditional lighting systems. It is a safe option only if one sensor accurately reflects the ambient readings for the group.
  2. Choose the group ambient Sensitivity.

Tip: Use a value of 5 for moderate utilization of daylight. The lights will never turn off due to daylight.

The group ambient Sensitivity overrides the sensitivities set in the profile. A value of 10 will allow 100% of the Target Ambient Light Level to be provided by other light sources. A value of 0 requires that the fixtures provide the light, defeating the daylight group's purpose. Choose a value of 5 such that 50% of light may be provided by light sources other than the fixture.

Enable ALS Fast Response

The ALS (Ambient Light Sensor) Fast Response parameter controls how quickly and smoothly the sensor responds to the change in the light level in response to the rapid changes in ambient light levels. To enable this:

  1. Click on the Three ellipsis dots and select the Enable Fast ALS

Select Sensors

  1. Hold the Ctrl key, click and drag a rectangle to select the sensors in the area, or hold the Ctrl key and individually select the sensors to be grouped. Select as many sensors as needed, as there is no maximum limit. However, all sensors must be on the same floor. A sensor may only be part of a single daylight group. If the sensors already exist in another daylight group, you can skip the sensors or manually delete the sensors before adding them to a new group.

Note: Typically, Plug Load Controllers (PLCs) are not added to a Daylight group. Clicking the PLC icon   removes displaying them from the floorplan. However, if it is accidentally added, the error message "Daylight Groups support sensors only. Other devices selected will be discarded" is displayed. 

  1. Release the Ctrl key to create the Daylight Group with the selected devices. If you are an iOS user, use the cmd key instead of Ctrl.

The newly added Group is added and identified with a '+' symbol preceding the system-generated Daylight Group name in the right pane.

Choose Role

  1. Click on the new Daylight group. The list of sensors assigned to this group is displayed in the right-most pane. Select a role for each sensor.
    • Report and Act – Sensors report their ambient readings, and respond to the Group Light Level. This is the recommended option for typical office environments.
    • Report Only – Sensors only report ambient readings, but act independently of the group and follow whatever behavior their profile dictates.
    • Act Only – Sensors do not report ambient readings, but respond to the Group Light Level.
    • Master Sensor – If you have chosen Daylight at Master Sensor option as the method for calculating the group light level, choose a sensor from the list of sensors to be the Master sensor. Note: This option is available only when ‘Daylight at Master Sensor’ is selected as the calculation method.

Confirm and Save the Daylight Group

  1. Verify the selected Daylight Group parameters and make any final updates if needed. Click Save to save the Daylight Group.

TIP: If you prefer not to save the newly added Daylight Group, refresh the page. Refreshing the page does not save the new Group.
